Bert’s Recent Buy – Consolidated Edison (ED)

Lanny and I were painting the Dividend Diplomats’ headquarters last week (aka – his house).  He left to take a quick water break and came back pretty excited. When he gets this tone in his voice, I know that only means one thing….there is a great stock that’s price is falling.   He brought up the fact that Consolidated Edison’s stock price was down over 1.5% that day.  Instantly I was excited because ED is one of our Top 5 Foundation stocks.  After a brief discussion, I was sold. Here is why I added to my position in Consolidated Edison in June.

Stocks to Look Forward to in 2017

Now that 2016 is coming to an end, I am very excited to ring in the New Year, that’s for sure.  Putting back up the Christmas Tree, cleaning out any items that are needing to be thrown away and creating more simpleness in my house had me thinking about the big stocks I’m looking forward to in 2017.  There are many reasons why I am trying to look at things more from a “bigger picture” and refining/tightening/sharpening a focused strategy in 2017, as it relates to investing.  The S&P 500 is up over 10% through Christmas and due diligence is going to be that much more “fun”.

Should I Sell my First Energy (FE) Stock?

Oddly, this isn’t the first time this thought has popped in to my mind.  Last year I wrote a piece title “3 Reasons I Would Sell a Stock.”  The listing was created to help me identify holdings that have fallen out of favor in my portfolio or have not performed.  After elaborating on the 3 reasons I would sell, I reviewed my portfolio for any stocks that met the criteria.  Any takers on guessing which one of the stocks that was discussed in the article?  First Energy!  Shocker, right?  After one heck of a run by the stock that has brought me close to break even, I now find myself asking the question again.  Is it finally time to sell my stake in First Energy?

Bert’s Quarterly Goals Review – Q2 2015

My goodness, we are halfway through 2015 and man has it been a fun ride.  The second quarter was a lot of fun and I felt like the market presented some great opportunities for dividend investors to take advantage of, whether the market had a general pullback from fundamentals or due to the most-recent saga in the everlasting Greek saga.   With all the purchases we had, I moved that much closer to accomplishing my goals in 2015 and I closed the gap on some of my largest, most difficult goals.   Now that the quarter is over, I wanted to take some time to review my progress and see where I stand and if any adjustments need to be made before it is too late.

My Greece Strategy

There have been a lot of major news stories over the last week covering topics ranging from social to financial issues.  It seems like every day there was some new development that had major implication, which is a great fit for our 24 hour news cycles.   The one story that has a substantial impact on us dividend growth investors is the continuing saga in Greece.  Once again, we find ourselves staring a default, departure from the European Union, etc., in the face and worst of all at any second a decision could be made that could send shock waves through the financial markets.  It finally hit me, I didn’t have a plan to capitalize on a potential downturn in the market.  But that all changes now.

Recent Purchase – Consolidated Edison

I recently reloaded my Sharebuilder (now Capital One Investing…I know, it will take some time getting used to) with some extra capital and was ready to make a purchase.  We recently built a small watch list that had me focused on buying two stocks I already own.  But man, what a difference a week can make and after some time, a new stock entered the picture for me.  This is a stock Lanny and I have been watching for a while and are huge fans of the stock.  Not only is it a Dividend Aristocrat, but it is one of the five stocks we consider a foundation stock for any dividend portfolio.  Unfortunately my title gave the purchase away, so let’s see why I initiated a position in Consolidated Edison this week.
