This week, I officially jumped back into the marketplace. It feels like it has been a while and finding great stocks at a value has been difficult (which is part of the reason why Lanny’s portfolio has sky-rocketed over the last few months). If you have been following the blog over the last few weeks or if you read the title to the article before clicking, the stock I purchased this week shouldn’t be a surprise. Time to see where I allocated my capital this week.
Turning the calendar from August to September usually means two things. Football season is here and that fall has arrived. Time to get out your pumpkin game on! Since our wedding, my wife and I have been talking about how excited we are for things to settle down. She is also in grad school, which is occupying a lot of her time, but she is in the homestretch and final semester. Why do I bring this up? Because there are a lot of great saving habits or routine that take time. When you are working full-time, planning a wedding, and in grad school like she is, time is at a premium. However, despite the busy schedule, the two of us have committed to trying to making saving routine in one aspect…..grocery shopping. In this article, I will walk you through why we want to establish a routine for saving on groceries and how we have been practicing this routine over the last several weeks.
What a journey it has been so far. Last week, after a sudden drop in earnings, Target’s price fell and I swooped up an additional 30 shares of the major retailer. Now, I own 80 freaking shares and couldn’t be happier. But the good great news didn’t stop there. No, that investment also put me over a milestone that I have been eyeing for a few months now. This last purchased pushed my forward dividend income over the $3,000 mark and you know what, there is no turning back now. How did I get to this point? Let’s take a look!
November 2012 marked a big change in my life . During that month, I lost my “dumb phone” on a flight to St. Louis (still haven’t figured out how I managed to do that) and upgraded to my first smartphone. For the longest time, I fought off the smartphone craze, saying things like “I don’t need it,” “I can live just fine without having the internet at my fingertips,” and “I don’t want to be one of those people addicted to their phones.” Well, after I left the airport and realized I didn’t have my phone in my pocket, that change I had been fighting for so long was forced upon me. Fast forward to summer 2016 and I was forced back into the “dark ages” for a week….I had to turn my data off! The good news here is that I am still alive to tell you all about it and I learned a lot about our addiction to data during these “troubling” times. I wanted to share this experience with you all, but please note the references to “struggling” or “tough times” or any other dramatic phrase have a major sarcastic undertone to it!
When I reviewed my goals after Q2, it struck me how far behind I was on my goal to earn over $1,000 in “Other Income” during the year. My goal review article talks about it at length, but what I realized is that the means in which I was trying to earn income were very time-consuming. It takes a while to buy video games, list them, ship them to the buyers, and so on. You get the drift. When you travel for work like we do (although my travel is way less than Lanny’s travel load), it is difficult to cram the necessary steps for many “other” activities in the weekend. Especially when you want to catch up on as much blogging as you can on your days off. For me to hit my goal, I am going to have to change my approach to earning other income from a labor intensive operation that requires a home base to a mobile operation that can be performed from anywhere. So here I am, in my hotel room, brainstorming 5 ways for earning income online. As you all know, we love Top 5 lists on this website!
Lanny beat me to the punch for releasing our monthly dividend income summary and lets just say I have a tough act to follow. $1,100 in total dividend income and a 30.31% dividend growth rate…impressive numbers Lanny! You are crushing it. However, the show must go on here and luckily for me, I had some nice year over year growth as well. Time to peel back the layers and take a dive into my June dividend income summary!
