Lanny’s July Dividend Income Summary

The hot summer month of July is officially in the books and it’s that time of the month to share the dividend income totals!  Not to keep rubbing it in – but I wonder the Cavs championship and the recent RNC in Cleveland has kept the steam in this engine running, or maybe it is cold hard capital that is keeping the train moving like the locomotive it is.  Either which way – another month is finished, another month towards the goals and another month towards financial freedom.  Without further-ado, let’s see how the month turned out – dividend income wise.

Dividend income

This month, I received a total of $349.11 of dividend income, not too bad, but not amazingly high.  Way too damn consistent with these dividend income payers here, but hey – that’s not necessarily a bad thing and when we compare to prior year, let’s see if they are each paying more than their younger selves, eh? haha:

July Div Inc

No real specific items here except that Canadian Imperial (CM) has had a nice dividend with increasing it each quarter, however – currency translation has been impacting the amount us US citizens receive.  Similarly, Total (TOT) is still paying a heft dividend even though they are going through the oil headwinds as well.

Similarly, I have split out between the individual stock amounts and the retirement accounts, as the ” – R” indicates a Roth IRA dividend (or the furthest column to the right, I must have left the “R”‘s off this month).  I separate these two, as I like to know what portion of my dividend income is coming from those retirement accounts that I cannot touch until 59.5 (barring any other usage rule I could use).  Here, it shows that I received a total of $32.43 or 9.3% of my income from retirement accounts (up from 4% last year) and the other 90.7% was from my individual taxable account portfolio.  We all know my set it and forget it mentality to keep that retirement income going, as well as my new Tax Strategy Part 1 but also pumped to see that I had 8 companies pay me in my taxable individual account.  To see my portfolio – one can go to our portfolio summary page.

dividend income YOY Comparison

Something that I like to do now is attach in prior year’s dividend income, which the image is copied in below, with 2015 first and 2016 to follow.

2015: dividend income

2016: July Div Inc

As you can see – last year I had the special dividend from the acquisition of Karft & Heinz with 3G Capital that gave an extra $439.55 jolt to last year’s income.  Removing that from the equation, I earned $301.16 last year vs the $349.11 this year or a $47.95 (15.92%) growth from last year, which is incredible.  Glasxco Smith (GSK) was the only company that paid less of a dividend year over year, and all else had big jumps, for sure.  I would love for this to be over $400, however, next year.  Well, I hope that the fact that I recently CRUSHED over $7,000 in projected dividend income helps get me there, that’s for sure!  So lucky here.

dividend increases

…Sadly, nothing to report here : (  August we’ll have some : )

dividend income conclusion & Summary

As I discussed with my NEW updated – normal monthly expenditures at the moment, this $349.11 would cover 35% of my average $984 monthly expense for my house, including utilities; this is also down from last year, due to one-time dividend as mentioned above, but believe with the organic growth – it is trending the right way.  All of the investing from last year and moves this year, show being frugal to save 60% of my income, that every dollar counts, has helped me in achieving lofty goals that I set in place for my 2016 year.  What do you guys think of my month of July?  Boring?  Not as exciting?  Is the market boring for us because they are trading at alarming P/E levels, i.e. it is around 25!??!  Are you building up the cash ammo or still staying consistent with the dollar cost average?  Excited to read everyone’s and hope the community had a great month of July!  Please leave comments and thoughts below and talk soon.  Thank you for coming by, as always!

  1. Nice income Lanny! The only company I share on that list is TOT but didn’t buy in time for this month’s divi. Your $300 + though is motivating as I’m not going to break $100 this month.
    Have a good weekend!
    JT

    • JT,

Thank you very much! TOT still has been pumping cash even with everything occurring to oil. You’ll get there, you’re on a mission, stay on the path and you’ll land where you want to be. You probably will surprise even yourself and crush it all.

    • Pollie,

Thank you!! It was a “standard” month essentially, right? I think August will be very similar as well. I will take it though, the reinvestment, etc.. and it’ll push it forward and to better heights. Time is key.

      -Lanny

  2. Lanny,

Nice job! You continue to make tremendous progress. August will probably be higher for you and then the big payout month of September is just around the corner! I love the journey you are taking us on!!!

    Keep grinding!!

    • MDP,

Always a pleasure to have you stop by, means a ton.

August will be a very similar month to July, which isn’t bad, but just isn’t exciting!!! haha. But yes – September the monster month will be here sooner than later. Pumped to read your summary as well. Thanks MDP, talk to ya soon boss.

  3. Nice job Lanny. O had been a beast as usual, wish I bought more but things should come down soon I hope. I was able to pick up some cvs and I may pick up some gild if it drops down to 75, ambitious but potentially worth it! Haven’t tallied my month yet but will let you know soon!

    • Stefan,

Agreed – hands down, wish I would have chunked a Sh*t ton into O as it’s been a great payer, without a doubt. I realized – they just increased the dividend AGAIN by 1%… at the end of July. It wasn’t too significant, so I didn’t have it up top.

Pumped to read your summary MB, looking forward to it and thanks for stopping by.

  4. Awesome stuff Lanny! I was surprised to see the big YoY decline but it’s good that it was just because of the special dividend and nothing nefarious was going on. Looks like a solid start to the second half of the year.

    • JC< Thank you - Kraft killed me here! Joking, a great company now combined with Heinz, so I can't complain. Decent start, looking forward to your post! Thanks JC for coming by, 5 months to go! -Lanny

  5. I took the plunge and bought my first dividend to see what it feels like. (I do better with hands on learning and not just reading and seeing how things should work). Looking forward to next quarter to see how it goes. HCP treat me well.

    • ZJ,

Thank you very much for coming by. No way – congrats! Bought your first div stock eh?? That’s awesome!! HCP should be paying a divvy at the end of this month – I own them and I think you are in good company ; )

  6. Great month Lanny. Glad to see the increase in the yoy, excluding the special divi of course. The snowball is continuing to build either way. Keep up the good work. Your crushing it! Thanks for sharing!

    • More Div,

Thanks for the comment! The snowball i continuing to get large and I love it. Keep it going yourself MD, Building that foundation, so that the bricks keep stacking. Good luck and thanks for being apart of the community, it’s awesome.

  7. Nice monthly dividend income Lanny. A 15% increase YoY is impressive. If you can sustain annual monthly dividend growth like this you’ll be sitting on a beach drinking margaritas while others are at work 🙂

    • Hunting,

Margaritas, you think? That would be hilarious. I would love to work at the coffee shop by the office for a few months and to serve them a cup and say “have fun being miserable!” haha, joking, joking. I need to keep the growth up, most of this has been just DRIP and growth of the divvy, it’s awesome! Talk to you soon IH, doing big things!

  8. I have to say I’m not feeling that hot summer of July in Seattle 🙂 Nice change of pace for sure with mild temps. Another super solid month for passive income earned. I’ll take a “boring” few hundred dollars any time. Keep up the good work. As always, I enjoy following your journey.

    • DivHut,

Thanks for coming by as always. Jealous – Seattle is awesome, getting a lot of run though this summer? Drought big tme here in Northeast Ohio.

Haha – boring money is always okay with me as well, let’s just get more of it, eh? haha Keep it up!

  9. Solid dividend income Lanny, tough to see the YOY drop but I’m sure with you continuing investing you’ll see a big increase next year.

Hot? I just came back from HK/China a few weeks and it was 35C (95F) with humidity, so felt like 46C (115F). We were just in Kelowna this past week and it went all the way to 37C (99F), luckily it was dry heat, more tolerable.

    • Tawcan,

Thank you and agreed – wish once in a while a few more acquisitions could occur ; ) joking, don’t like the capital gain taxation too much!

Holy COW – 115F?! Are you crazy – how much water are you putting down??

      -Lanny

    • DDU,

Haha, I’m loving that! Maybe one ticket at this point and the salaries they are getting paid – ticket prices are going to come out the ass! hahahah. Thanks Tristan – excited to read yours and others progress!!

      -Lanny

    • DFG,

Getting there, right? Definitely will cover any auto expense. What I could do is… dump the auto, eh? haha, I wish so bad I was in a walkable place of living. Kills me. We’ll see. Thank you for stopping by, as always!

      -Lanny

  10. 15% growth is nothing to sneeze at – that’s real good! To me any growth above 0 is always a good sign :). You should be able to hit $400 next year no problem as long as you keep pumping money in each month.

    • TiTMB,

I appreciate the 15% growth comment, feels weird – doesn’t feel like I did much, that’s the funny thing.

I hope to make a few more investments before the end of the year, that could spring that up, and I expect a few more divvy increases as well. Upward and onward!

      -Lanny

    • CF,

As always – T H A N K YOU! For coming by. Wished we could multiply that by 2, right? I’d definitely enjoy a nice 32% increase instead : ) maybe next year? Need to keep it moving!

      -Lanny

  11. I guess it is not that GSK paid less, but that it was the British pound which fell on the markets..
Anyways, a great number, congratulations, and to many more years to come!!
    Cheers,
    Victoria

    • Victoria,

Yep, you got that right, the damn exchange rate and currency fluctuations definitely hurts us in time of dividend collection : )

Thank you for the congratulations, we are all doing well and doing what we can and it’s always something positive, something we can’t forget! Thanks again.

      -Lanny

  12. Hi Lanny, hitting nearly 16% yoy growth is impressive. I don’t have any of those names on your list, but it seems that they’re treating you well! Keep up the great work.

    • Niche,

Thank you. It’s okay, you just may in the future! Especially if the stock market decides to cool off (aka, PLEASE!!!).

But things aren’t too bad right now, looking forward to producing more income, that’s for sure.

      -Lanny

  13. Great job Sir! Well done. I have been laying low and building up the dry powder in the cache lately. I did discharge a portion of that cash today when BMY plunged 16% on the unfortunate phase 3 clinical trial failure of their lung cancer drug. BMY’s been around a long time and not going anywhere so I decided to jump in and take a position. I wouldn’t expect it to drop much more, if any, than it already has and so should be a fairly safe dividend bet and chances are there’s still some good to come from that drug with modifications and there will be others in their arsenal once they lick their wounds and get back at it.

    • Gary,

Thank you very much. I haven’t made an individual purchase in 2 months, so I’m with you.

I did see the plunge, the yield is finally getting back at almost ~2.4% – thinking of pulling a trigger?

keep us posted, could be an opportunity!

      -Lanny

  14. Great job on July’s dividend income! I want to move my portfolio towards dividend minded stocks however it’s hard to find a good value stock in this market. I do a have a few dividend stocks and I came away with $42.70 for July.

    • Cash Lab,

Nice job with the $42.70. One company that shows nice signs of undervaluation right now to me is Target, worth looking into. Pumped to see if you can make more of the transition to it. Keep us posted.
